There are few experiences as electrifying as Tiger fishing on the Lower Zambezi. Imagine drifting along one of Africa’s most iconic rivers, with elephants wading nearby and the sun rising over a golden horizon, when suddenly, a Tiger Fish explodes out of the water on the end of your line.

Why Tiger Fishing on the Zambezi is So Special
The Tiger Fish (Hydrocynus vittatus) is a symbol of the Zambezi. Renowned for their speed, aggression, and power, they are a thrilling opponent for both bait and fly anglers. These fish don’t nibble, they strike.
A fishing trip at Baines’ River Camp is a complete immersion in wild Africa. With experienced guides, well-equipped boats, reliable gear, and the stunning backdrop of the Lower Zambezi National Park, everything is in place for an unforgettable adventure.
Personalised Adventures with Expert Guidance
Whether you’re new to fishing or a seasoned angler, our guides are here to support your experience. With years spent reading the Zambezi’s currents and moods, they’ll help you make the most of every cast.
Wildfly, one of Southern Africa’s most respected fly fishing operators, frequently collaborates with Baines’. Their endorsement and on-location filming with us speak to the quality of fishing you’ll find here.

What to Expect on the Water
From our riverside lodge, you’ll head out at first light aboard spacious boats which are perfect for fly, lure, or bait fishing. The boats are stable, well-equipped, and skippered by pros who understand the river and its wildlife.
You’ll fish in prime Tiger habitat: deep pools, fast-flowing channels, and eddies near the floodplains. And while your focus might be on the fight, don’t be surprised if you find yourself equally mesmerised by the wildlife. Lions on the riverbanks, Hippos wallowing and Bee-eaters darting past.
Gear and Techniques
We supply all the essentials for conventional bait and lure fishing, but if you’re planning to fly fish, we recommend bringing your own gear. Most fly anglers use a 9wt rod with a large arbor reel, Gel Spun Braid backing, and a mix of floating and sinking tropical lines.

Common Baits and Lures
- Dead bait: Chesa fillet rigged to mimic a wounded fish
- Spoons and spinners: Flash and vibration attract strikes
- Crankbaits and plugs: For subsurface action
- Jigs: Especially effective when bounced through deeper water
Whether you’re casting, or fly fishing the thrill is the same.
When to Come
The best Tiger fishing at Baines’ typically occurs between September and November, and again from March to April. During these windows, water levels and temperatures align to maximise your chances.

More Than Just Fishing
When the rods are packed away, the experience continues. From sundowners on the riverbank to evening wildlife drives, your stay at Baines’ includes far more than fishing.
With just a handful of guests at any time, our camp offers space, peace, and privacy. Each suite is designed for comfort, and our team delivers warm, personal hospitality from the moment you arrive.
Sustainability and Conservation
We advocate for catch and release and work to ensure the Zambezi remains a healthy ecosystem for future generations. Fishing at Baines’ means fishing responsibly with reverence for the river and all who depend on it.
