Where Birdlife Thrives

The Lower Zambezi is widely recognised as one of Africa’s most rewarding birding destinations – not only for its species diversity, but for the quality, accessibility, and visual nature of its sightings.

With over 380 recorded bird species, the Lower Zambezi supports a rich mix of resident birds and seasonal migrants. The Zambezi River corridor, mature riverine forest, open winterthorn woodland and floodplain edges create ideal conditions for birding that is unhurried, immersive, and deeply satisfying.

While the species list is extensive, several birds are considered standout sightings in the Baines’ River Camp area:

Best Time for Birding

The Green Season (November to March) is the most rewarding time for birding in the Lower Zambezi with:

  • An influx of migratory species
  • Breeding plumage and courtship displays
  • Active Carmine Bee-eater colonies
  • Lush landscapes and high insect activity

Days are warm, with occasional afternoon storms that refresh the landscape and create excellent light for photography between weather systems. The result is a quieter, more intimate safari season with exceptional birding conditions.

Birding Habitats

Birding at Baines’ spans a variety of habitats within a compact area:

  • Zambezi River & Sandbanks – skimmers, kingfishers, waders and waterbirds
  • Riverine Forest – owls, finfoot, bee-eaters and woodland specialists
  • Winterthorn & Mopane Woodland – hornbills, raptors, woodpeckers and passerines
  • Floodplains & Open Areas – ground birds, storks, bustards and seasonal migrants

This diversity allows for a high species count without long transfers or specialist birding excursions.

Birding Photography

As noted by Rockjumper Birding, the Lower Zambezi is “one of the most enjoyable and prolific birding destinations in Africa.” The region is particularly well-suited to photography:

  • Birds are often tolerant and approachable
  • Open riverbanks and woodland provide clean sightlines
  • Canoe, boat and vehicle safaris offer varied photographic angles
  • Strong morning and late-afternoon light enhances colour and detail.
