Vundu: The Zambezi’s Other Giant

Most people come to the Lower Zambezi for the Tiger fish. And they should. There is nothing quite like a Tiger on the end of a line. But there is another fish in this river that stops every angler mid-sentence the first time they see one come up from the deep. The Vundu.

Southern Africa’s largest true freshwater fish, the Vundu (Heterobranchus longifilis) can reach up to 55 kg and 1.5 metres in length. It is not a fish you forget.

What Is a Vundu?

The Vundu is a species of air-breathing catfish found throughout the river systems of sub-Saharan Africa. On the Zambezi, it lives in the deep pools, undercut banks, and slower channels, hunting by vibration and scent in water too murky for eyesight to be much use. Its broad, flattened head, wide gaping mouth, and long sensory barbels make it unmistakable. When a large Vundu rolls at the surface, you notice it from some distance away.

Like the Tiger fish, the Vundu is a protected species on the Zambezi: catch and release only. These fish are becoming increasingly rare across their range, and at Baines’ River Camp we take that seriously. Every Vundu is handled with care and returned to the river.

Fishing for Vundu on the Lower Zambezi

Vundu are bottom feeders and predominantly nocturnal, which means the approach is different from tiger fishing. Bait fishing with cut fish or natural scent baits presented in the deep holes and along submerged structures, is the standard method. The fight, when it comes, is not the explosive surface run of a Tiger. It is a slow, grinding, powerful battle from depth. A big Vundu does not panic. It simply pulls.

Our guides know where the fish hold on this stretch of river. That knowledge, built over years of reading the water, is the difference between a day of waiting and a day of fishing.

Two Species, One River

Fishing the Lower Zambezi for both Tiger fish and Vundu in the same trip is entirely possible, and it gives you a complete picture of what this river holds. The Tiger is the showman: fast, acrobatic, impossible to ignore. The Vundu is the river’s quiet heavyweight. Experiencing both on the same stretch of water is something very few freshwater anglers ever get to do.

If the Zambezi is on your list, do not come just for one fish. Come for the river.
