The mighty Zambezi River is one of Africa’s iconic natural wonders, and a mid-season visit during the southern hemisphere’s cooler months offers some of the year’s finest opportunities to view wildlife without the crowds. Here are some recommendations from us at Baines’ River Camp to consider while planning your Zambezi getaway between May and September.

1. Dress for the weather
Zambia’s winter runs from May to September. The season usually experiences average daytime temperatures of approximately 27°C (80°F). Mornings in June and July can drop to around 10°C (50°F), while nights are normally around 11°C (52°F).
We recommend packing clothing you can easily layer, like gloves and a beanie for the cold and a cap for the winter midday sun. This will help you keep warm during crisp mornings and nights, and cool during the warm midday sun.
Despite the ‘cooler’ season, the African sun remains intense. A cap or brimmed hat is essential for protection and can double as a handy source of warmth during early game drives or riverside sundowners.

2. Attractions and activities
Outdoor activities and excursions are well worth exploring over this period. Physical activities like canoeing and walking safaris are arguably more enjoyable with the weather keeping you cooler.
Wildlife sightings also improve dramatically during this period. As the rains subside, vegetation thins and water sources dwindle, drawing game closer to the river and into the open. This makes for easier and more frequent sightings. It can be especially rewarding for those interested in wildlife photography. We recommend arranging a game-drive with Baines’ for an intimate, personalised safari excursion like no other to help you capture those pictures you’ve been dreaming of.

3. General preparation
While the Lower Zambezi is undeniably beautiful, it is also remote. This means you’ll need to plan ahead.
There are a limited number of shops and facilities in reach once you’re in the area, so it’s wise to make doubly sure you bring your own essential items like personal medication, sunscreen, batteries, etc. Our FAQ page also covers some common queries we get that could help you as well regarding preparation.
f you’re seeking solitude, thrilling wildlife encounters, or the simple joy of being out in nature, one thing for sure is that winter along the Lower Zambezi is a truly rewarding safari experience.
With a little preparation and the right expectations, your trip during the cooler months can be one of the most memorable times to explore this extraordinary region. From golden light on the river to quiet mornings in the bush, winter reveals a side of the Zambezi River that few travellers get to experience, and it’s well worth the journey.
