Life on the Zambezi: Sightings & Safari Stories from Baines’ River Camp

As the 2025 season gains momentum, life at Baines’ River Camp has already been filled with thrilling moments, incredible wildlife sightings, and a few unforgettable visitors – both human and wild!

Wildfly and Reel Africa Trip

This April, the Wildfly and Reel Africa teams joined us at Baines’ for an unforgettable few days on the river. While the conditions were challenging at times, the incredible wildlife encounters and the renowned Baines’ hospitality ensured we made the most of every moment – and captured some truly breathtaking footage.

Weeks like these offer the perfect opportunity to showcase everything that Baines’ and the Lower Zambezi have to offer. From the scenery to the service, there’s so much here to make your stay unforgettable – and leave you longing to return.

Behind the Scenes at the Park Lunch

Fishing Highlights

From 17–22 April, the river delivered plenty of action. Our guests reeled in four Tiger fish, including one double-digit fighter, plus a massive 40lb Vundu and plenty of Chesa, all caught in the Game Management Area (GMA). Whether it’s the challenge of the Tiger or the surprise of a record-breaking catch, the Lower Zambezi continues to impress.

Wildlife Sightings

On land, the drama has been just as exciting. Lions have been particularly active in and around camp, with a pride spending several evenings near Room 8 – a reminder that at Baines’, the wilderness comes to you.

Meanwhile, the GMA pack of Wild dogs has been spotted frequently near Royal Airstrip, delighting guides and guests alike with their rare and charismatic presence. Elephants have made regular appearances throughout the area, often seen ambling through the floodplains or browsing near camp. Buffalo sightings have also been scattered, offering that classic safari thrill.

A Note on Access

Thanks to recent rainfall, park drives have been more limited than usual, but sightings within the GMA and near camp continue to deliver memorable moments daily. As the terrain dries out, we look forward to unlocking more areas for exploration.

From big cats near the chalets to trophy fish in the river, we’ve been reminded just how magical the early season can be. Whether you’re planning your return or dreaming of your first visit, the wild wonders of the Lower Zambezi are waiting.
