Wild Zambia: 5 things you need to experience

Wild Zambia: 5 things you need to experience. Zambia is one of the few places in the world where you can still experience unfenced wild and solitary spaces. Whether you are in the bush or on the river, serenity and tranquillity will surround you here. The Zambezi River, great lakes, majestic waterfalls, wild animals and warm people are the lifeblood of this country

With so many unique experiences to be had in wild Zambia, Baines’ River Camp aims to provide visitors with luxurious and beautiful accommodation where you can experience your tailor-made African Safari. Whichever type of vacation you are looking for we’ll help you make it happen.

Here are our top 5 Wild Zambia experience recommendations:

Experience #1

Experience the earth – A walking safari is the “real McCoy”, you’ll get authentic Zambian dust on your walking shoes. By immersing yourself in the raw African environment you will gain a whole new perspective on Africa. You will see nature in extraordinary detail and suddenly a game drive seems like a movie trailer or overview of the actual event.

Imagine smelling every wild scent nature has to offer. (Most of which are pleasant to the senses.) The scent of the air, the water, the sand, the vegetation and the animals as the hot African sun starts to warm your skin. An African Safari is often a tangible experience.

Experience #2

The Falls – The Victoria Falls is a UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. This spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi was described by the Kololo tribe, living in the area in the 1800s, as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – “The Smoke that Thunders”.

The “Vic Falls”, is a great spot to relax before or after a safari and perfect for a romantic getaway. The Falls offer a range of activities for the more adventurous at heart; these include bungee jumping, white water rafting, swimming in the Devil’s Pool on the very edge of the falls or taking a Micro Flight over the Falls – all of which will guarantee an adrenalin rush that’s hard to forget.

Experience #3

The Zambezi – Apart from a most relaxing sunset cruise along the river, the Zambezi has a variety of other attractions to suit any water-loving visitor. These include:

  • Canoeing safaris – This is without a doubt, one of the most popular safari activities on offer. As you glide silently through the waters of the Zambezi’s channels, you will have the privilege of viewing birds nesting, lions lazing and warthogs roaming the banks of the river. In the afternoons, elephants often convene on the water’s edge for a drink before crossing the channel to graze on the other side.
  • River safaris – Cruise the Zambezi River with one of our experienced river guides. Game viewing from the river adds a different dimension to your safari as most wildlife is more at ease with boats in the water than with vehicles on land. With the added flexibility to move around the boat, a river cruise offers spectacular photographic and viewing opportunities.
  • River rafting â€“ The Great Zambezi boasts over 23 rapids in the Batoka Gorge. River rafting on the Zambezi is one of the most intense and thrilling activities you could experience. You’ll be treated to awe-inspiring scenery from sheer black cliffs to local wildlife. There are a few different packages to choose from, a half-day trip, full-day trip or two-day trip. You’ll launch from just below the Falls and run the rapids in large rubber rafts.

Experience #4

Starry, starry nights â€“ Have a sleep-over at the Wild family’s home. Gather around the ambient fire pit, tell stories of the day past and speculate on what tomorrow may hold. Sleeping under the stars in the Zambian bush is oddly appealing. Here the ceilings are made of stars and you are wrapped in the music of the night. Listen to distant roars, chirps, grunts and squeaks, continually playing in the background, lulling you to sleep.

Experience #5

Tiger fishing – Catching a Tigerfish on fly is widely considered to be the pinnacle of freshwater fly fishing and the opportunity to do so on the Zambezi should not be missed. The fishing clinics provided by Baines River Camp will contain information gathered by our guides, over their many years, on how to find and catch Africa’s most powerful freshwater game fish. With a ratio of two anglers per boat, you’ll be assured of maximum attention from your guide, translating into more hook-ups.
