Getting there
Zambia’s main international airport is located just outside the capital, Lusaka, and has daily flights arriving from various major cities in Africa. If flying from Europe, British Airways offers three direct fligths weekly from Heathrow to Lusaka. Other international airports in Zambia include Livingstone and Ndola. The camp is located 9 km from the Royal Airstrip, a tarred 2 km long bushstrip within the Lower Zambezi Valley. As soon as we have been advised of your itinerary, we can book your flights to and from Baines’ River Camp accordingly.
The majority of our guests prefer to fly from Lusaka down to the Zambezi Valley. A scheduled 30-minute flight in a light aircraft takes you to the Royal Airstrip from where one of our guides will take you on a short game drive to the camp on which the first of many elephants and other wildlife may be viewed.
If first visiting the Victoria Falls, you can opt for a direct, private charter from Livingstone to the Royal Airstrip, which will take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Depending on the number of travellers, it may be more economical to fly commercial to Lusaka and connect to the scheduled 30-minute flight to the Royal Airstrip, from where we will collect you. During the peak season (15 July to 30 Oct) limited direct flights between Livingstone and Royal are available. Further details available on request.
The South Luangwa National Park offers spectacular game viewing and a number of beautiful safari lodges and camps. Its closest airport is at Mfuwe and, similar to travelling from Livingstone, you have the option to charter a private aircraft from Mfuwe Airport to the Royal Airstrip for a 1 hour and 45 minute flight, or you can travel on a commercial flight to Lusaka and catch the scheduled shuttle flight from there. During peak season, direct flights on light aircraft between Royal Airstrip and Mfuwe are available. Please enquire.
We can assist with and book transfers that you may require between Baines’ River Camp and other destinations within Zambia.
With access to two longhaul pressurised aircraft, a Beachcraft Kingair 200 and a state-of-the-art 2010 Pilatus PC12 NG, we can offer charter flights from any airport in South Africa, flying direct into Royal Zambezi, clearing at either Livingstone or Lusaka en-route. With champagne on board, there is no better way to get there! Please contact us for further information.
For the more intrepid traveller, it is possible to drive to Baines’ River Camp. However, we strongly recommend the use of a 4×4 vehicle as the last 60 km of road to our camp is extremely rough in some places. A favoured alternative is to drive as far as Gwabi Lodge, situated on the Kafue River, close to the confluence of the Zambezi River, where you will be met by one of our river guides for a boat transfer for the last 40 km of the journey, a great way to enter the bush.
If you are enjoying a few days on a houseboat on Lake Kariba, we can arrange for a road transfer from Kariba to Baines’ River Camp. The driver will assist you with the border crossing and immigration formalities. A drive over the Kariba Dam Wall offers a spectacular view of the Zambezi River.
When travelling through Africa, the itinerary options are endless and if none of the above transfer suggestions suit your schedule, please don’t hesitate to contact us via reservations@bainesrivercamp.com and we will get you from A to B safely.
